this drill is inspired by the great Frank Gambale, among others
consider the following tab in G major with standard 6 string guitar tuning
-----------5-5-----------5---------------------5-
---------5-----5-----------5-----------------5---
-------4---------4-----------5-------------5-----
-----4-------------4-----------7---------7-------
---3-----------------3-----------7-----7---------
-2---------------------2-----------8-8-----------
the difficulty in this drill is coordinating the pick with the left hand
the pick should move in a single direction completely across all of the strings
we don't want it to sound like we're playing a chord
instead, we want each note to sound separately, so, consequently
we need to enable each note before the pick arrives
and mute that same note after the pick passes
there are many different alternatives for fingering order in this exercise
